More About This HIV Risk
Reduction Research

Heterosexual transmission accounts for 80% of HIV infection in women (CDC, 2006).

The primary goal of this research, funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research (RO3 NR009349-02) was to develop an urban soap opera video to communicate relevant HIV risk reduction themes by associating data and theory-driven HIV risk reduction messages with emotionally charged normative sex scripts as experienced by urban women.

Consistent with the aims of this study, the video was pilot tested using a pretest-posttest control group test design to detect short-term attitudinal changes in sex scripts and sexual pressure and to evaluate the acceptability and relevance among young urban women, of both the video content and the experience of watching the video on a hand held computer. Hand held computers offer the advantages of portability and privacy.
