I was given the opportunity to work as a research assistant with Dr. Rachel Jones in 2004 as part of the Bridges to the Doctorate program. As part of our research, we conducted focus groups in Newark and Jersey City, NJ. The sample included African American, Caribbean, and Latina women.

We explored reasons why some urban women engage in unprotected sex with men whom they don't trust and even believe are engaging in risk behaviors. These focus groups were therapeutic for many of the women who participated, giving many a feeling of power and a sense of awareness.

I admired the women's strength for sharing their lives with us and listening to their life struggles. This was a very emotional and empowering experience for many.
