Love Safer: The Right Way to Use a Condom

"When a man pulls out a condom you better keep him because he’s a good one"

Check the package for it's expiration date. If it is past that date, throw it away.

A condom should be rolled up in a package that has no holes or tears. Inspect the package and the condom to see if it has holes or tears. If it has holes or tears, throw it away.

Where do I store my condoms?

Store the condom in a cool, dry place. Don’t store the condom in your pants pocket or the glove compartment of your car. Light and heat can cause the condom to break.

What is a lubricant? What lubricant should I use?

A lubricant is a gel that gives moistens the condom so it doesn’t feel dry or tear. Use lubricated latex condoms. If the condom is not already lubricated, then spread the lubricant inside and outside of the condom. Use only water-based lubricants (ex. K-Y jelly™ or AstroGlide™).

If you are allergic to latex (get a rash) then use polyurethane condoms. They feel good too and are sold at most drug stores.

Don’t use Vaseline, petroleum jelly, ointments, cold cream, butter, or mineral/vegetable oil. These can also break the condom.

Don’t reuse the condom. Use a new condom for each erection.

How do I put on a condom?

  1. Open the package.

  2. If not lubricated, put a drop of lubricant inside the condom.

  3. If not circumcised, pull the foreskin before rolling on the condom.

  4. Put the rolled condom on the hard penis and unroll it all the way to the bottom of the penis.

  5. Leave a half-inch space at the tip to collect the semen (cum).

  6. Pinch the air out of the tip with one hand, while placing the condom on the penis.

  7. Smooth out air bubbles. (Air bubbles in condoms during sex can cause the condom to break)

  8. Lubricate the outside of the condom if the condom isn’t already lubricated

How do I take off a condom?

  1. Pull out before the penis softens.

  2. Hold the condom against the bottom of the penis while you pull out so you don’t leak any semen (cum).

  3. Throw the condom away.

  4. Wash the penis with soap and water.

What do I do if the condom breaks?

Pull out quickly. If semen (cum) reaches the vagina, contact the clinic. You can get tested and you can get the morning after pill.
